The Beautiful History Of Neosho, MO
Neosho Missouri is located in Newton County on the western edge of the Missouri Ozarks. The name is of Native American origin, meaning "clear or abundant water." It was called this due to the town’s 9 springs that played an important part in its early development.
The area was first settled in the early 19th century, and Neosho was named the county seat of Newton County in 1839. During the Civil War, no major battles were fought in Neosho, but much of the downtown area was burned in 1863. Being near the center of the country, Neosho, MO became a nexus of major railroads. In 1870, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (A&P), which later became known as the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad (Frisco Railroad), reached Neosho. In 1887, both the Kansas City/Fort Smith and Southern Railroad (now known as the Kansas City Southern Railroad arrived and still operate in Neosho today. Neosho also served as the place the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad connected with the Frisco and Kansas City Southern tracks in 1908.
Being so connected caused a lot of people to move to Nesho, MO. Today, it’s a city of 12,157 people with a rich culture. Neosho is proud to be the home of the United States National Fish Hatchery, which was established in 1888 and is the oldest one in the country. Neosho is known as the “Flower Box City” because it’s become a tradition for businesses to have an abundance of flowers around them. Nearby Big Spring Park is also a favorite of the residents for its natural beauty and plethora of flora to gaze at.
